octaverc can be found in /usr/local/Cellar/octave/4.0.0_5/share/octave/site/m/startup and the line you put in there is setenv(‘GNUTERM’,’aqua’) Octave has a file, octaverc, that it checks at every start up for additional commands it should load so that’s a good place to put our instruction. Secondly, We need to tell Octave that it should output graphics with gnuplot to Aquaterm. Adding just one line: export FONTCONFIG_PATH=/opt/X11/lib/X11/fontconfig It’s a good idea to check now whether Octave plots nicely, if you happen to run into a fontconfig error like described on stackoverflow you wanna do two things:įirstly, tell the terminal each time it starts to fix the fontconfig issue by editing the ~/.bash_profile.
Now we need to make sure that gnuplot outputs to Aquaterm: $ gnuplot gnuplot> set terminal aqua If Aquaterm is being difficult there’s some more help here. Once Aquaterm is there, we need to uninstall and re-install gnuplot with our new best friend Homebrew: $ brew uninstall gnuplot $ brew install gnuplot -with-aquaterm Please make sure you have XQuartz installed, otherwise you can use Homebrew to do that.įirst we need to install Aquaterm which is a graphics renderer working well with gnuplot. If everything works, perfect, skip the next section. You can now start Octave from the Terminal by just typing octave and you should do so in order to check whether your plotting infrastructure works or not.
